Artist Residencies:
Application Guidelines

Length of residency varies by individual artist depending upon space availability and artists’ requirements and schedule. Residency season is divided into two sessions — applicants are asked to choose a period of time of up to 4 weeks within a session.

2007 Residency Season:

  • Session I: June 1 – July 20
  • Session II: August 1 – September 23

Applications must be postmarked by February 1, 2007
Applicants will be notified the first week of April, 2007

How to Apply:

Submit the application and a work sample.

Work Sample(s):

Work will only be returned if you include a self-addressed, stamped envelope. Please make sure that the envelope is a suitable size and that the postage is sufficient.

Literature/Poetry/Non Fiction/Drama

Submit 4 copies of no more than 30 pages, single-sided and double-spaced. Drama applicants should format sample scripts according to convention. Please be sure your name is on each page of your work sample.

Visual Arts

Please note that administratively we prefer submissions on CD-ROM or DVD, but that slides and VHS submissions are acceptable. Committees judge the work only, not the form of submission. Make sure your name appears on all copies.

For CD or DVD submissions: Submit one copy containing no more than ten images or 15 minutes of video. Please include five copies of a separate piece of paper that includes information on the title, dimensions and media of work, and collate within the paper portion of your application.

For slides: Submit one copy of no more than 10 35mm-color slides. On each slide write your name, include the title of the work, and indicate the top. Please provide five copies of a separate piece of paper that includes information on the title, dimensions and media of work, and collate within the paper portion of your application.

For VHS submissions: Submit one copy of the tape, with no more than 15 minutes of your work. Please include five copies of a separate piece of paper that includes any necessary description of the work, and collate within the paper portion of your application.

Performance/Video/Film

Please note that administratively we prefer submission on DVD, but that VHS is acceptable. Committees judge the work only, not the form of submission. Submit one copy of DVD or VHS tape of no more than 15 minutes, making sure your name appears on the copy. Please provide five copies of a separate piece of paper that includes any necessary information on the work, and collate within the paper portion of your application.

Putting Together Your Application

For Literary Artists

Please collate four separate copies of your application in the following order:

One copy of the cover page, followed by one copy of your response to questions #1 and 2 above, followed by one copy of your resume, and followed by one copy of your writing sample. You will do this for each of the four copies. Use a paperclip or binder clip for each collated copy.

For Visual Artists & Performers

Please collate five separate copies of your application in the following order:

One copy of the application cover page, followed by one copy of your response to questions #1 and 2 above, followed by one copy of your resume, and followed by a page with information on your work sample. You will do this for each of the five copies. Use a paperclip or binder clip for each collated copy. Include your work sample in your package unattached to the five copies of the application.

Evaluation of Applications

Applications are evaluated by admission committees comprised of artists working in each artistic discipline. Many of the committee members are former residents. While we welcome repeat residencies, if two artists are rated equally, preference will be given to the applicant who has not previously attended a residency at Hall Farm.
